However, the path to Thursday's meeting is far from guaranteed. Media, citing a senior US official, reported Sunday that Washington will only proceed with the Geneva talks if Iran submits a detailed nuclear proposal within the next 48 hours. The official indicated that a concrete Iranian submission could unlock "detailed negotiations" toward a broader nuclear accord, with an interim agreement potentially serving as a stepping stone before any comprehensive deal is finalized. A separate senior US official corroborated the planned Geneva session to Axios but stressed that the Trump administration is still awaiting Tehran's proposal — expected no later than Tuesday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told media that the proposal is still being finalized, with both sides working on elements that will "accommodate both sides' concerns and trusts." He acknowledged that Iranian leadership has yet to formally endorse the submission, though he expressed confidence that meaningful progress would emerge when the two delegations convene.
The stakes could scarcely be higher. Senior US officials cautioned through media that the current diplomatic push may represent the final opportunity before Washington greenlights a large-scale joint military operation with Israel — one potentially targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei directly. The warning is underscored by a visible American military buildup across the Middle East: the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and additional fighter jets have already been repositioned to the region, with the USS Gerald R. Ford now en route.
President Trump set a 10- to 15-day negotiating deadline on Thursday, reiterating on Friday that a more limited strike remained on the table should Iran fail to engage in what he called a "serious" agreement.
